Click Here To Learn about Gender, Diversity and Inclusion's Impact of Employee Engagement and Talent

I was having a social lunch on Saturday at a friend’s house. The male companion of one of our friends who was visiting from Chicago, a tenured professor of applied electrical engineering, made a comment that started a heated a discussion. He said that he didn’t think that women were discriminated for opportunities in the sciences or technology, at least at his university. He thought the fact that the population at his university is over 70% male didn’t seem to make a difference – “Women had the same opportunities as men”. I thought one of our other female friends who was sitting across the table was going to launch across the table and strangle him with her bare hands. She has been in business for over 25 years, has a PhD and is a CEO of a biotech nonprofit. She said that women are discriminated in the sciences all the time. She continued saying something to the effect, ”that women were being held back because groping white men were reaching up under their skirts and holding them back.” Wow! Yes, lunch was a little uncomfortable after that point, but we made got through it with serious discussion, fine wine and laughter.

Click here to get tips on what a company can do now to improve engagement and retention

According to a recent study by Quantum Workplace, there will be a talent retention struggle in 2017 and beyond. They theorize that the answer to the question “it would take a lot to get me to leave, this organization,” has the second largest decline and ranks at the bottom of total favorability factors. This indicates that retention will be a struggle in 2017, particularly for organizations that don’t pay attention to team dynamics and career development. It was viewed as the top predictor of employees leaving an organization. Only 47.4% of exited employees said it would take a lot to get them to leave the organization, while 62.5% of retained employees said the same.

The Friendly Skies of United Are Not So Friendly Anymore

This week, United Continental Airlines forcibly ejected a paid and seated passenger, Dr. Dao, after he refused to be voluntarily bumped off the flight. He was leaving Chicago on United Continental express flight 3411 to Louisville Kentucky. During the scuffle, his mouth was bloodied and he was dragged down the aisles and pulled off the plane, while other passengers were astounded and shocked by the treatment. Video was captured during this traumatic event and shown on all the evening news broadcasts, sparking outrage on social media.  Articles were written in all major newspapers including the Wall Street Journal, which wrote an editorial against this incident. Additional ridicule and criticism occurred after it was made known that Mr. Munoz, United Continental’s CEO wrote to employees seemingly defending his employees’ actions over Dr. Dao and other passengers on the flight. On Monday, he said he “regretted the need to re-accommodate him and the other passengers.” And later in an email to employees, he struck a more defensive tone, stating that “while I deeply regret the situation arose, I also emphatically stand behind all of you.” Only after additional criticism and rebuke by the press and in social media, did he change his views and release a statement that said, “I share all those sentiments and one above all express my deepest the apologies for what happened.”

A Culture Of Healthy Debate

A culture of healthy debate is vital for any successful organization. Ideally, debate will result from a diversity of ideas and perspectives, and the resulting discussion would improve the end product/service. However, in reality, debate can often be a difficult and anxiety-inducing process. In some cases, certain control-oriented managers may even discourage debate, preferring a hierarchical structure of decision-making with infrequent subordinate input.

Is It Hours Or Deliverables That Define Productivity?

I recently read an article written by Benjamin Cardullo, a Campus Editor Contributor at Linked In, entitled Business: A Modern Health Crisis. Benjamin talks about the fact that we live in a world in which our importance is defined by how busy our day is, and it is often a badge of honor to say that we never have a moment to ourselves. And yet, he makes the case that with modern technology, we could accomplish the things that used to take a full 40-hour workweek in 29 hours. I found the article intriguing because he also ties this phenomenon to the condition of our health and the productivity of our workforce. Exceeding Customer Expectations Is A Moving Target

According to a recent study by Gartner, 89% of marketers expect that customer experience will be their primary differentiator by 2017. The quality and relevancy of the product and the competitiveness of pricing will continue to be important. However, good product and pricing alone will not be sufficient to differentiate one company from another and create brand loyalty and advocacy. Customer expectations regarding the entire experience continue to increase with regards to the pre-purchase process, ordering, receipt of goods and services, customer support, billing, and after-sales support.
