Click here for full article: Engagement is Driven by Feelings of Support and Belief in Future Succe

I read and review many reports on internal branding, and employee engagement to stay abreast of the latest trends and direction in branding, marketing, HR and organizational transformation. This week I came across an interesting study that was recently completed by Quantum Workplace, that raised some interesting issues regarding the value of “feelings” of your employees and the impact that “feelings” have on employee engagement and future success.

The Friendly Skies of United Are Not So Friendly Anymore

This week, United Continental Airlines forcibly ejected a paid and seated passenger, Dr. Dao, after he refused to be voluntarily bumped off the flight. He was leaving Chicago on United Continental express flight 3411 to Louisville Kentucky. During the scuffle, his mouth was bloodied and he was dragged down the aisles and pulled off the plane, while other passengers were astounded and shocked by the treatment. Video was captured during this traumatic event and shown on all the evening news broadcasts, sparking outrage on social media.  Articles were written in all major newspapers including the Wall Street Journal, which wrote an editorial against this incident. Additional ridicule and criticism occurred after it was made known that Mr. Munoz, United Continental’s CEO wrote to employees seemingly defending his employees’ actions over Dr. Dao and other passengers on the flight. On Monday, he said he “regretted the need to re-accommodate him and the other passengers.” And later in an email to employees, he struck a more defensive tone, stating that “while I deeply regret the situation arose, I also emphatically stand behind all of you.” Only after additional criticism and rebuke by the press and in social media, did he change his views and release a statement that said, “I share all those sentiments and one above all express my deepest the apologies for what happened.”

A Culture Of Healthy Debate

A culture of healthy debate is vital for any successful organization. Ideally, debate will result from a diversity of ideas and perspectives, and the resulting discussion would improve the end product/service. However, in reality, debate can often be a difficult and anxiety-inducing process. In some cases, certain control-oriented managers may even discourage debate, preferring a hierarchical structure of decision-making with infrequent subordinate input.

Is It Hours Or Deliverables That Define Productivity?

I recently read an article written by Benjamin Cardullo, a Campus Editor Contributor at Linked In, entitled Business: A Modern Health Crisis. Benjamin talks about the fact that we live in a world in which our importance is defined by how busy our day is, and it is often a badge of honor to say that we never have a moment to ourselves. And yet, he makes the case that with modern technology, we could accomplish the things that used to take a full 40-hour workweek in 29 hours. I found the article intriguing because he also ties this phenomenon to the condition of our health and the productivity of our workforce. A lot of facts and figures have been swirling in my brain over the last few weeks, and I have been trying to make some sense of all of it. This is what I’ve been hearing and reacting to:

Exceeding Customer Expectations Is A Moving Target

According to a recent study by Gartner, 89% of marketers expect that customer experience will be their primary differentiator by 2017. The quality and relevancy of the product and the competitiveness of pricing will continue to be important. However, good product and pricing alone will not be sufficient to differentiate one company from another and create brand loyalty and advocacy. Customer expectations regarding the entire experience continue to increase with regards to the pre-purchase process, ordering, receipt of goods and services, customer support, billing, and after-sales support.

The Responsibility To Create An Innovative Culture Lies With Employers

We recently came across an impactful study conducted by BMC, which was shared at last month's Davos World Economic Forum: http://bit.ly/2iBDIHc.  The theme for the annual meeting in Davos was Responsive and Responsible Leadership, as "traditional industries are being redefined and new ones are being created from scratch." Advances in machine learning, artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things, self-driving vehicles, and new payment technologies are forcing businesses, governments and individuals to examine how people work and the skills required of labor forces to meet the demands and needs of digital industry.

Will Outsourcing Kill Employee Engagement?

According to a recent front-page article in the Wall Street Journal entitled “The End of Employees”, US companies are shifting work once considered to be core company functions to contractors, which is pruning costs and job security for workers. The article states, “never before have American companies tried so hard to employee so few people. The outsourcing wave that moved apparel making jobs to China and call center operations to India is now just as likely to happen inside companies across the US and in almost every industry.”
