The Employee Burnout Epidemic

Any good manager knows that their team cannot perform at a consistently high level if they are tired and overworked. And yet, a number of recent studies show that employee burnout is a significant contributing factor affecting staff turnover, morale, and employee engagement.

Why Is “Purpose” So Important?

Last week, our CEO posted a blog addressing the definitions of vision, mission, values, and purpose and how they work together to define an organization. So let’s talk specifically about “Purpose”. Why is it so important to an organization to define and communicate their purpose?

Inward’s 18th Anniversary – 10 Commandments of Internal Branding, Culture, and Employee Engagement

It was 18 years ago that we first started building our own brand identity. At the time, many companies were conducting large-scale process redesign and reengineering programs. Reportedly, close to 50% of those programs were failing, and 80% of the credit was given to reasons related to company culture clashes. Our thinking? What could we do to help organizations deal with enterprise change, culture realignment and internal branding?

A Great Plan Is Only As Good As Its Execution

Recently we published a blog in which we talked about the gap between recognizing employee engagement as a strategic imperative and dedicating the proper resources to address it. In that blog we included some suggestions on how to secure the resources required to effectively create a culture of high engagement. But securing the resources is really only half of the solution. Creating that culture requires a commitment to execution of the engagement plan.

Don’t Get Caught Sleeping Behind The Wheel

I was planning to write a blog post this morning on an entirely different topic. I changed my mind when I saw the scene outside my office window. Apparently one of the technicians from a local utility company thought it was okay to grab at catnap in the middle of the day. I immediately thought that the company might have an employee engagement problem if their people feel it’s okay to take a nap in the middle of the day. Now I realize people have good days and bad days. Perhaps he had a late night taking care of the sick child, or maybe he had insomnia couldn’t get a good night sleep. Or maybe he was up partying to the wee hours of the night and woke up with a hangover.

The Essentials of Employee Value Propositions

Two weeks ago I attended the Advanced Learning Institute’s (ALI’s) Employee Engagement and Internal Brand Activation conference in Chicago. I was asked by ALI to lead a step-by-step employee engagement workshop on the first day which was well attended. As a speaker, I was also invited to stay for the second and third day and listen some outstanding speakers from TD Bank, Scripps Networks Interactive, Mondelez International and VW of America. The content in the conversations at this year’s conference was really outstanding. Kudos to the presenters and the organizers.

Personalizing Employee Onboarding

From a young age, we are all taught that first impressions are often the most important. This oft-repeated advice is typically associated with an individual meeting someone for the first time, whether it is for an interview, the first day of a new job, or even a date. While this is indeed good advice for an individual, we believe that companies should also adopt this mentality with incoming employees. When onboarding new employees, first impressions leave a lasting effect that can determine an employee’s tenure, perceptions, attitude, and career trajectory with the company. Companies should consider reaching out to incoming employees even before their start date, personalizing their experience to ensure a smooth transition from day one. In this way, organizations can more effectively connect these incoming employees with their culture, mission, vision, values, expected behaviors, and ultimately true employee engagement.
